It may never attain the fashion icon status of the iPod Mini, but in terms of value and versatility the Zen Micro beats all competitors. Although clearly inspired by Apple's mid-range marvel in terms of design, Creative's player offers better features, is available in more colours (10 compared to the Mini's five) and is compatible with a wider range of online music stores.

The Micro's compact, attractive build is complemented by a luminous blue backlight that makes the controls easily visible in the dark. Touch-sensitive buttons and a vertical scroll pad allow for fluid operation, while the menu system takes little time to master. Adding tracks to playlists is very simple, plus you can use the DJ function to play all the songs you've loaded in a random order, play only tracks from a specific album, or play tunes you either rarely or frequently listen to.

Verdict
With 5GB of storage, you can carry around roughly 1,250 tracks in MP3 format or twice as many in WMA, with the additional option of using part of the hard disk to store data files. However, it's the extras that really make the Zen Micro stand out: an FM radio with 32 presets, from which you can also record; a built-in microphone for making voice notes; and a calendar, to-do list and contacts book, which synchronise with Microsoft Outlook. The 12-hour battery life is about average for a medium-capacity player, but the excellent sound quality far outshines its rivals and the supplied earphones are of a surprisingly high standard.
