When it comes to all-round printing quality, we thought this Canon model did an astounding job. The one area where it suffered was in producing the delicate pale flesh tones required for some of our test photos.

This is probably because, with its waste-proof four-cartridge printing system, it doesn't provide the option to swap out a black cartridge for a specialised photographic cartridge. The impact on the quality of photos is small, but visible, so potential purchasers will have to choose between absolutely perfect photographs and eliminating waste.

Although it lacks obvious features such as a card reader, bubbling under the surface are plenty of qualities that make the printer easy to use – automatic alignment, software for quickly printing and sharing photos, and the fact that you'll only have to swap out a cartridge when it's empty.

Verdict
This is a cracking printer. From its inconspicuous quietness while printing to its good all-round results, it's a great choice. It's a little bit more expensive than its main rival but, if you don't have a requirement for printing direct from memory cards and are concerned about wasting ink, it's the ideal choice.
