The Digital IXUS 70 is the most expensive camera on test and lives up to its price tag. It's the smallest of the group, although there's little in it in terms of thickness and height, but it has managed to shave a few millimetres off the width – proving itself to be completely pocketable. It's also remarkably flat, with only the shutter button standing proud of the casing. Inspired by the original IXUS cameras, its familiar shape and look make it something of a design classic that has clearly stood the test of time.

Despite the diminutive dimensions, it still squeezes in a cracking 7-megapixels resolution with a 3x digital zoom and 2.5in LCD screen on the back. There are some fancy features in tow, including an ultra light-sensitive mode for shooting better indoor pictures when you don't want to use flash; excellent face detection to help ensure your portraits are well focused; and a natty, if somewhat extravagant, time-lapse mode – handy for capturing slow-moving subjects.

In testing it produced gorgeous flesh tones and good general colour reproduction, while its combination of excellent quality lens and anti-shake software picked up a lot of detail on distant zooms. It has an incredibly powerful macro function too, which lets it focus very close for high-detail shots.

For a great all-rounder that really can slip into your pocket, the Digital IXUS 70 is a truly magnificent performer, capable of capturing all your precious memories with quality and style.
