Installation of the CanoScan 4200F is very straightforward. It comes with separate image-editing software, which you needn't install if you're already using another program.

As a result the scanner relies on its TWAIN drivers to hook up to the software, leaving a simple icon-based control panel – which mimics the buttons on the front of the device – to operate automatic functions. This means you need to be a bit more of a sophisticated user, but most people shouldn't run into problems. The driver software itself comes with two options, complete with drop-down menus for those not wanting to get into anything too specific.

The scanner is capable of 3,200 dpi in 48-bit colour and communicates with your computer via a USB 2.0 cable. The housing is a little more compact than its rivals, but it has a flimsy-feeling cover to the film scanner, which might take some looking after if you're planning on using this option a lot. It will also scan straight to PDF files.

Verdict
If price is an issue, but you want great-quality scans with superb colour and don't mind a bit of a learning curve before getting the most out of your scanner, this is a good option.
