CCleaner (full name CrapCleaner) is one of those rare downloads that's so good you wonder how it can be free, and start looking for some sort of catch. Fortunately, there isn't one; it's just a fantastic program with a great set of features that can be employed at your discretion to keep your system spick and span.

Dealing with the most important areas of your hard disk – your web browser (be it Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Opera), Windows Explorer and many third-party applications (including Acrobat Reader, QuickTime and Spybot) – CCleaner performs its duties quickly and efficiently. You specify the types of file you'd like to remove, and the program determines how much space you can save, then lets you perform the mass deletion with a single mouse-click.

Sensibly, warnings are given when vital information such as passwords will be lost, while you can choose which cookies are kept or removed. Besides clearing unnecessary files, CCleaner provides an uninstaller for troublesome software, a start-up manager to stop unwanted programs running when your computer starts, and a registry scanner to detect and fix potential problems.

Verdict
Despite such extensive functionality, CCleaner is wonderfully simple to use and always double-checks before making any permanent changes.

The only thing it lacks is a scheduler for performing regular maintenance, though you can set it to run automatically at the start of each PC session.
