Buffalo's system of setting up a network is a little complicated. It has a sophisticated system called AOSS (AirStation One-Touch Secure System) for setting up a secure connection between two devices such as this modem router and an adapter on your PC. To connect the two and secure them, all you need to do is press a button on each device at the same time – the built-in software will do rest. The downside is that it will only work with two devices – if you want to connect any additional devices to your network you'll have to use a more traditional route.

Whether you use AOSS or not, you'll still need to use the router's browser-based set-up interface to enter your broadband settings and the basic defaults aren't particularly helpful. It won't pose too much of a challenge to someone who has set up something similar before but while rival devices seem to have got some sensible country-specific defaults built into their software, the Buffalo only has them listed in the manual.

Once you've got it up and running, however, the device runs smoothly. It fared well in our tests, providing a decent level of coverage all over our test house and maintaining a good level of speed across the network. The only issue with the device is that we didn't find it as easy to set up a network consisting of more than two devices as we did with rival models.
