This hard disk is designed to plug into your home network so you can share your files around the house. The Ethernet connection offers a simple path into your network's router, or you can use USB if you need access to the data when there's no network around. The device has a USB port to which you can attach a printer to keep it available when other computers are switched off, or you can use it to attach another USB hard disk to schedule back-ups if your data is highly sensitive. However, it's another device that has quite a noisy fan, which won't matter so much if it's near your PC but might if your router is hooked up in a quiet spot.
