With the Voyager 2100, BT has gone for a no-frills device that covers the basics well. With it you can create a Wi-Fi network that adheres to the 802.11g standard, with a maximum speed of 54Mbps. It can also connect via cables to up to four computers using its Ethernet sockets and there's an off switch – probably the simplest way of ensuring no-one else can use your internet connection via Wi-Fi while you're not using it.

Installing the device doesn't require a set-up CD, you simply follow the quick-start installation instructions to connect the hardware and use a web browser to complete the set-up. Built into the device itself, the installation software loaded as easily as a web page by simply typing 'voyager.home' into the Address Bar. Having no installation CD is a liberating experience – all hardware should work like this. Because BT knows exactly which settings your ADSL connection will have there are no further complications – enter your username and password and bingo, you're on the net.

To keep things as simple as possible, all wireless security options are switched off so you'll want to alter that immediately. The web interface is relatively simple, with plenty of online help, but it might still be a touch over-whelming for the complete beginner.
