There's an immediate split between the two types of sniping service that are available. Auction Sniper is a web-based service and that gives it a real edge over the software options that sit on your computer. After all, having to remember to leave your PC on with the internet connection running is a major drawback for the software options.

Auction Sniper also scores points for its 'pay-as-you-go' nature. You only pay a fee of around 1 per cent of the item's cost when one of its snipes gets a result. If you're buying hundreds of items a month you're better off with a subscription service, but this will suit most users' needs.

Setting up a snipe is easy using a button you can add to your browser toolbar, whether you use Internet Explorer, Netscape, Firefox or AOL. When you're on an auction page you want to snipe, simply click the button. One missing feature is that this auto snipe option doesn't remind you how much the minimum bid should be, which is standard on other snipers. It does have a BidGroups option though, so you can bid on the same item from different sellers without winning more than one.
