Probably the best known of the free anti-virus programs, AVG's software is straightforward and very reliable. It offers real-time, on-demand and (optional) email scanning, and the program updates itself regularly once a day. If the software hasn't been updated in a while, the coloured icon in the system tray will turn grey to alert you to the problem. The main drawback is that updating can be quite slow at times, and obtrusive too – popping up large windows to tell you what's going on.

The program has two main screens – the Test Center (for launching scans and checking for updates) and the Control Center (for telling you the status of the various program components). It's very easy to get to grips with and when the program encounters a virus, the problem is swiftly dealt with in a reassuring manner.
