A very close competitor to WinZip, 7-Zip has the advantage of being free of charge. When it comes to creating archives, the program offers the choice of the native 7z format, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR and ZIP, but far more formats are supported for extraction. Used at a basic level, 7-Zip is instantly accessible, but more advanced features such as using command lines parameters will require reading of the Help file. For back-up purposes, the program 7-Zip makes it easy to automatically split large archives into a number of sections sized for different media. It is worth getting to know the program in order to use it to its full potential.
