Wi-Fi use boosted by holidaymakers

With much of the UK on their summer holidays the number of people accessing Wi-Fi at holiday and leisure parks has soared.

According to figures released by BT Openzone, during the first two weeks of the school summer holidays Wi-Fi usage rose by 350 per cent with 60 per cent of holidaymakers using Wi-Fi to check emails and surf the web through mobile devices.

This surge is almost four times more than the rise seen during the whole of the Easter holidays.

It also claimed that families are turning to smartphones and iPads for entertainment and inspiration during their breaks.

Chris Bruce, chief executive officer at BT Openzone said: "Technology is coming to the aid of the traditional British holiday, as more and more people opt for more glamorous camping holidays."

"Wi-Fi is proving to be a simple but essential way for holidaymakers to access the internet and to keep their families amused during unpredictable weather," Bruce continued.

However, holidaymakers need to be aware of online risks at this time of year too. A recent report found that people in search of bargain holidays were compromising their online safety by ignoring basic security advice.

During the first two weeks of the school summer holidays Wi-Fi usage at UK holiday and leisure parks rose by 350 per cent, according to BT.
