Sky to broadcast 3D football games this year

Sky television bosses have said that customers may soon be able to watch sports broadcasts in 3D on special TVs in pubs and homes.

The media company has begun testing its technology by filming various shows and services in 3D and sport, namely football matches, have proved the most successful.

Arsenal's match against Bolton at the Emirates last Thursday as well as a handful of Champions League games, boxing, golf, tennis, rugby and cricket are just some of the sports Sky has been testing its 3D technology on.

Sky also announced at the recent CES exhibition in Las Vegas that it was working on 3D content.

Brian Lenz, Sky's director of Product Design and TV Product Development said: "Our HD customers already have a 3D capable set-top box. By working together with set manufactures, we want to provide a hassle free way for consumers to enjoy 3D TV."

Customers will need a Sky HD set-top box, a 3D TV as well as compatible 3D glasses to watch the broadcasts.

The BBC has similarly announced that coverage of the 2012 Olympic games will be available in 3D and Fifa and Sony are planning to broadcast World Cup 2010 matches in 3D, as was announced last year.

Football matches may soon be available to watch in 3D in pubs and living rooms after Sky carried out trials of the technology.
