Airline offers in-flight mobile and Wi-Fi

Oman Air says it will be the first airline in the world to offer in-flight mobile phone calls and web access on certain planes from February.

Passengers aboard Oman Air's A330 fleet will soon be able to use their mobiles and surf the internet during flights.

From mid-February, the airline will offer Mobile OnAir and Internet OnAir services using Airbus ALNA V2 system and Honeywell's SwiftBroadband.

The service will be available in First-, Business- and Economy-class cabins.

Oman Air's chief executive officer, Peter Hill, says: "People are increasingly expecting internet and mobile connectivity 'anywhere, anytime' and what better place is there than on an Oman Air A330, when you have a few quiet hours to catch up on your email, browse the internet or return that quick phone call."

The connectivity follows the introduction of Oman Air's latest in-flight entertainment system, which offers four channels of live TV and audio-video on demand.

Availabilty of the service will be controlled by the crew to make sure other passengers aren't disturbed by loud phone calls, for example, during the quietest periods of overnight flights.

The EU gave its approval to in-flight mobile phone calls back in April 2008.
