Man arrested after airport bomb joke on Twitter

An air passenger has been released on bail under the Terrorism Act after jokingly threatening to blow up an airport on Twitter.

Twitter post sparks arrest under Terrorism Act

Paul Chambers from Doncaster is currently on bail until February after using Twitter to express his anger about a runway closure at Robin Hood airport.

The 26-year-old was due to fly from the South Yorkshire airport the following week and tweeted, saying: "You've got a week and a bit to get your s*** together, otherwise I'm blowing the airport sky high."

Police were alerted to the threat and he was arrested under the Terrorism Act on suspicion of conspiring to create a bomb hoax.

UPDATE: Twitter bomb joke man charged by police

After being questioned for seven hours and having his laptop, iPhone and home computer confiscated, police released Chambers on bail pending further investigations.

He has also been banned from Robin Hood airport for life and suspended from his job while investigations take place.

The finance supervisor said he thought something may have happened to his family on first seeing the police but realised what the allegations were when they produced a print-out of his Twitter profile.

"I had to explain Twitter to them in its entirety because they'd never heard of it. I would never have thought, in a thousand years, that any of this would have happened because of a Twitter post. I'm the most mild-mannered guy you could imagine," Chambers said.

Mike Morton, Robin Hood Airport director, said: "The safety of our passengers and staff is of the highest importance to us and we work closely with South Yorkshire Police to make sure that any kind of unacceptable behaviour is dealt with immediately. We simply will not tolerate such activity."
