Tiger Woods car crash video warning

Cybercriminals are attempting to trick surfers looking for information about golfer Tiger Woods' car crash.

Tiger Woods video Trojan warning

After golfer Tiger Woods crashed his car over the weekend and suffered minor injuries cybercriminals are exploiting surfers' thirst for information about the incident.

Woods apparently hit a fire hydrant and a tree and had to be extracted from the vehicle by his wife, who used a golf club to smash a rear window of the car.

However, the full details of the crash haven't completely emerged as Woods has postponed a meeting with police several times.

This has helped cybercriminals to exploit interest in the story, with several sites claiming to have video footage of the crash appearing in search results.

However, the video doesn't exist, with the web pages in fact containing a Trojan that infects your PC and allows hackers to turn into into a spam-producing 'bot' without your knowledge.

"The Tiger Woods story has been one of the top news stories around the world this weekend, and search engine statistics show that many people have been hunting for developments via the web," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos.

"Hackers don't waste any time jumping on the coat-tails of a hot news story like this, in their attempt to infect as many computer users as possible," Cluley continued.

This isn't the first online scam involving Tiger Woods; back in 2002, the star was forced to deny that naked pictures circulating on the web were of his girlfriend (and now wife) Elin Nordegren.
