Microsoft has issued instructions to surfers running Internet Explorer 6 and 7 in order to protect them from a new threat.

Microsoft has offered a number of workarounds to help protect anyone affected by the newly discovered flaw in some versions of the Internet Explorer browser.

The company has issued a security advisory to help affected surfers, though there is no patch available yet.

IE users warned to disable JavaScript

Anyone using Internet Explorer 6 or 7 is potentially at risk, especially if using the Windows XP operating system.

"I want to point out that Internet Explorer 8 is not affected on any platform and that running Protected Mode in Internet Explorer 7 on Windows Vista mitigates this issue," said Jerry Bryant of the Microsoft Security Response Center team.

Symantec yesterday advised anyone affected by the flaw to disable JavaScript to protect against the threat.
