Obama denies ever using Twitter

The President of the United States of America has told a group of Chinese students that he has never used micro-blogging service Twitter.

The comments were made by Barack Obama in Shanghai and were also streamed live on the official Whitehouse website.

"I have never used Twitter but I'm an advocate of technology and not restricting internet access," Obama said.

This pronouncement may come as something of a surprise to his 2.6 million followers, particularly as the account, @barackobama, is verified - meaning that it has been officially approved by Twitter.

However, even when an account is verified, it doesn't necessarily mean that all updates are sent by the individual in question - just that the account has been approved by the person it claims to represent.
