Napster has taken the fight to digital music rival Spotify with the revamp of its Unlimited bundle.
Customers can now stream as much music as they like from Napster's catalogue of around eight million tracks for a flat rate of £5 per month. They can also download five tracks every month to keep forever as part of the deal.
Previously, Napster Unlimited customers paid £10 per month for unlimited streaming and the pricing change brings the UK package into line with that already offered in the US.
Additionally, Napster Unlimited customers will be able to preview and purchase tracks from mobile phones.
"We listened to our customers and developed a service that provides music lovers with a flexible, best-value service that allows them to tailor their digital music experience to their personal requirements," said Thorsten Schliesche, Napster's vice president of sales and marketing for Europe.
"Whether users want to build on their own collection of tracks, discover new music or simply stream their favourite songs into their own space - Napster has worked hard to provide an environment where music lovers can create their own easy-to-use experience, all available under one fixed and best-value cost," he continued.
Napster's revamp is seen as a response to the popularity of Spotify, which this week celebrated its first birthday.
Spotify offers two packages, one a £10 monthly subscription deal which offers unlimited music streaming with no advertising, and the other a free deal with advertising between every few tracks.
Spotify also offers an iPhone app, a road that Napster has ruled out going down.

I've just cancelled Napster after being happy with the previous service. No downloads mean that i can no longer use my own music player to play the tracks before i decide to purchase, and i point blank refuse to use that horribly slow interface that they provide!!! Napster deserve to sink for this. It was the one thing they offered that was better than any of the others and they just removed it!

I agree with all the above, I too will be cancelling my subscription. The download service that allowed me to play files offline was the only reason I have kept my subscription for the last 4 years. Bye Bye Napster....

Been with them for a few years now and loved the unlimited system.
Streaming is no good to me.
I cancelled yesterday.

Totally agree with all the comments - I don't understand why they haven't left this in place. For some reason one of my friends still has the ability to download tracks & albums - don't know why, other than he's just returned from holiday and not had his PC on for a week or so?
