Rich poorly served by broadband

A report has found that it isn't just people living in remote areas who have trouble accessing broadband services.

People living in some of the most exclusive parts of the UK are unable to access decent fixed-line broadband services, according to a report.

The survey from Top 10 Broadband found that Henley-on-Thames and Marlow in Buckinghamshire are poorly served by fixed-line broadband despite being wealthy areas.

According to the research, broadband connections in Marlow are under 500Kbps on average, compared to the UK average of 3.6Mbps.

Alex Buttle, marketing director of Top 10 Broadband, said: "If you thought that poor broadband coverage was confined to windswept crofters in remote villages in the Scottish Highlands, think again.

"We’ve known for a long time that money can’t buy you love. Our research shows it’s no guarantee of a good home broadband service either," he continued.

The company recommends that residents of areas poorly served by fixed-line broadband should look into mobile broadband services.

The recent Digital Britain report recommended covering gaps in fixed-line broadband offerings with mobile and satellite broadband services.

However, recent mobile broadband coverage maps released by Ofcom showed that many areas of the country don't have access to these services either.
