Oldest Bible goes online

A digitised version of a manuscript containing what is the earliest complete copy of the New Testament has gone online.

Codex Sinaiticus

A manuscript including the earliest complete copy of the New Testament is online thanks to a joint project between the British Library and institutions in Russia, Germany and Egypt.

Codex Sinaiticus, a complete version of the Bible was written at some time during the 4th century and is in Greek.

But even if you do speak Greek you may have trouble deciphering the New Testament manuscript as it is in an early dialect known as Koine.

Some but by no means all of the manuscript comes with English translations.

Many of the parchment pages are incomplete but now they have been digitised they can be accessed by scholars all over the world.

Codex Sinaiticus is said to be one of the most important books in the world.
