The Royal Family now has an official Twitter account, offering updates on royal engagements and the family's activities.

Buckingham Palace has announced that the Royal Family has joined Twitter.

The public will now be able to get regular updates on details of royal engagements as well as a link to information about what members of the family are doing.

After several weeks of testing, the site finally went live on Friday.

"The intention is that it is a news service rather than a personal voice," a Palace spokeswoman said.

What is Twitter?

She also said that neither the Queen herself or any other member of the Royal Family wouldn't be 'tweeting' individually.

According to the spokeswoman, the Queen and the Prince of Wales had been informed about their account on Twitter.

Management of the @BritishMonarchy account will be split between Buckingham Palace and Clarence House.

Some of the first 'tweets' have been posted, many with links to the Official British Monarchy site and another with a link to a YouTube video showing Prince William talking about the charity Skill Force.
