Domain name scam warning

Owners of domain names up for renewal should watch out for offers to renew names at inflated prices

Owners of domain names up for renewal should watch out for offers to renew names at inflated prices, according to the Website services company Managed Web.

Managed Web claims that a number of owners of non-UK domains due to expire in the next few months had received letters from a company called Domain Registry of America, warning them that their domain was due to expire and providing a payment form for renewal.

Managed Web's MD Gary Baker says, "We are advising recipients of these letters to ignore them. Their domain name will normally be renewed by whoever registered it in the first place. The company sending out these letters is merely touting for business."

The Domain Registry of America letter is very similar to those sent out in February by the UK Internet Registry. The UK Internet Registry letter looked just like an invoice and the company was asking for a whopping £175 to renew a UK domain name.
