Barclays has warned its online customers to watch out for a scam email, which asks for confidential details and passwords. Internet fraudsters have bombarded thousands of web users with the email, which falsely claims that there has been a technical update to the Barclays website. Over 400 of Barclays' online banking customers say they have received the email, which includes a link to a page that appears to be a Barclays website and instructions to enter personal details. Known as "phishing", this type of scam is becoming increasingly common on the net. Scammers bombard random victims with spam and try to trick them in to entering confidential data. Barclays said it is taking action against the fraudsters and is closing down the websites as soon as it becomes aware of them. It has frozen several accounts and had pledged to cover any losses. "We are working with the National Hi-Tech Crime Unit to deal with this and we have frozen any accounts that have been affected but every account is also guaranteed under our online banking guarantee," said a spokeswoman for Barclays. Barclays reminds customers that it does not send any emails to customers requesting security or any other confidential information.
