The number of travellers booking hotels online has rocketed this year, a new report has found.

According to the survey from hotel reservations site Active Hotel, the number of people using the internet to book accommodation online has risen by 80 per cent since September 2002.

Active Hotel's online booking survey also reveals that London is the most popular destination for overseas visitors especially from Asia and Europe.

Dr Mattew Witt, operations director of Active Hotels, said: "Online booking volumes continue to grow dramatically. Even in London, where hoteliers were using the internet earlier, growth rates remain strong. There is also an increasing number of online bookings from overseas guests."
