McDonald’s is to offer its customers free music downloads when they buy a burger and fries.

The fast food chain has linked up with Sony's music store Connect to offer one free song for every promotional Big Mac meal purchased.

McDonald’s Big Mac Meal Tracks promotion, which launches next Tuesday in the US, Puerto Rico and Canada, will be available in the UK, as well as France and Germany, at the start of July following the launch of Connect Europe later this month.

Connect Europe will offer a catalogue of more than 300,000 songs, including albums and singles from both major and independent record labels. Tracks are expected to cost from 79p in the UK and more than two million portable Sony devices will be compatible with the new service.

"We are delighted to be partnering with McDonald’s on this innovative promotion, which will introduce millions of McDonald’s consumers throughout North America and Europe to Sony’s new Connect music store, which features their favorite artists and music,” said Jay Samit, general manager at Sony Connect.

“This campaign by McDonald’s will promote legal downloads, which is beneficial both to the entertainment industry and music fans around the world," added Samit.
