Britain is leading the world when it comes to internet and mobile safety, the Government has claimed. Home Office Minister Paul Goggins outlined the Government’s commitment to protecting children online at the Promoting Mobile and Internet Safety Conference in London on Tuesday. Mr Goggins said: "The Government is committed to protecting our children - ensuring the police have the powers to detect and pursue offenders; the courts have the powers to deal with them; and introducing an offence of ‘grooming’ to tackle paedophile activity on and off-line.” “The work by the Task Force on Child Protection on the internet has brought about a common understanding of the problems and challenges we face. Communications technology will continue to evolve, presenting new challenges. We have to continue to work together and spread our common understanding, to ensure that Britain continues to lead the world in child safety." John Carr, an internet consultant for children’s charity NCH, said: “It’s been a major year for the protection of children online, with significant steps made in combating crime globally. But there’s still a long way to go and, while we may be getting better at stopping illegal content, the industry can still do more.” In October, the Home Office will unveil new radio and online advertising which it said aims to target children with safety advice when they are online.
