Today is Safer Internet Day with the aim of promoting young people’s awareness about safe surfing throughout the world.

The event backed by the European Commission will see over 65 organisations participating in 30 countries from Australia to Iceland and from Russia to Singapore.

In Europe the day will be hosted by Viviane Reding, Member of the European Commission responsible for Information Society. The day is organised by Insafe, the European network of national internet safety awareness nodes.

A new internet safety awareness portal will be launched at www.saferinternet.org to empower users to guide children in their exploration of the web and highlight the positive aspects of advancing technology.

Events taking place in the UK include a conference on young people’s use of mobile technology and the launch of an Insafe story-telling competition for pupils.

You can also sign up for the first issue of the Insafe monthly newsletter from today which will keep you informed of innovation and events in Safer Internet
awareness raising. To sign up for the newsletter, write to chris.coakley@eun.org
, stating you wish to receive it in English.
