Sick internet fraudsters have launched a spam campaign that exploits the death of Pope John Paul II.
According to Sophos, spammers claim to offer a free collection of books by the late Polish Pope, whose funeral took place in Rome on Friday.
The emails say recipients can receive free copies of the books by clicking on a link, but this actually takes you to a website offering advice on "free money-making secrets", with no mention of the Pope.
Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos, said: “Spammers are prepared to plumb the depths in their attempt to get internet users to buy their goods or services. The Pope's death has been mourned by millions around the world, yet for the spammers it's just another opportunity to sell their unwanted wares.”
Last month, fraudsters tried to trick people into believing they were the beneficiaries of the late Sir Denis Thatcher's last will and testament.
Claiming to come from the attorneys of Sir Denis, the hoax email offered recipients £950,000 in compensation for work they have carried out helping the under-privileged.
