Broadband provider Bulldog has launched a range of 8Mbps broadband packages, with the first month of subscription costing just £1.

New customers that sign up for one of the 8Mbps services before 15 June will get their first month of access for just £1 and save 50 per cent off their second month.

Subscriptions start at £15.50 a month and include a free modem, but you must switch to a Bulldog telephone line, which comes with a £10.50 monthly rental fee. To switch from a BT line it costs £1. Existing Bulldog customers will be automatically upgraded to the 8Mbps service for free.

Emanuele Angelidis, chief executive at Bulldog, said, “8 meg from Bulldog, with no download caps, gives customers the freedom to use the internet as they wish. Thanks to the enhanced speed, people will have a really high quality experience, whether browsing, downloading DVDs, music or photos, as well as swapping large files.”

“As well as catering for the user who’s online most of the time, we also have Top Up packages for the light internet user or the cost-conscious as well as packages which include unlimited UK calls for those who spend a lot of time on the phone.”

Bulldog, which said it is able to offer the new services because of its network of unbundled exchanges through local loop unbundling (LLU), recently announced plans to double its coverage from 400 to 800 telephone exchanges. At the moment it claims to be available to almost a third of homes across the UK.

Last week, Tiscali said it would start installing its own equipment in BT exchanges in 27 BT exchanges in London through LLU in a bid to offer faster broadband services and potentially voice over broadband, IPTV and voice on demand.
