A British university has unveiled a new course to train people in the art of ethical computer hacking.

Ethical hacking is when experts attempt to break into technology systems so they can learn how to spot weaknesses that could be exploited by criminals.

The University of Glamorgan has teamed up with information security firm 7Safe to add a Postgraduate Certificate (PgC) in Penetration Testing and Information Security to its range of courses.

Dr Andrew Blyth, principal lecturer at the University of Glamorgan’s School of Computing, said: “The introduction of this specialist qualification broadens the scope of our existing IT education programme. It will assist the career development of individuals wishing to progress in this fascinating area.

“The theoretical and practical elements of the programme will provide students with transferable skills which are of tangible benefit in the industry”.

According to 7Safe, the need for this type of qualification has been highlighted by a dramatic increase in cyber-terrorism and internet related crime in recent years.
