Directory website 192.com has launched a new genealogy service.
Due to go live this sfternoon, the site offers searchable records of the more than 300 million registered births, marriages and deaths since 1837.
It has also added information from the 1861 Census, which includes details of ancestors’ occupations.
Pre 1983 data has been collated using scanned images of registry documents, while post 1984 data is available electronically. Both sets of records provide a specific code for each individual registration, which can be submitted to the General Registry Office (GRO) to receive a copy of the original birth, marriage or death certificate.
In addition, 192Genealogy provides numerous useful links and tips on how to get the most out of genealogy and with high levels of illiteracy in the 19th century as well as a fair amount of fibbing, particularly about occupations or age, budding genealogists need to think laterally when delving into their family’s past.
“More than 4 million people use 192.com to trace long-lost family from the present so it makes perfect sense that they should turn to us to help them trace family from the past” said Keith Marsden, managing director of 192.com.
“There’s no other site that provides the depth of detail that we can on both individuals and their properties. By adding a layer of historical data across this information, people can build a comprehensive family tree for relatives that will allow them to discover not only their family’s past but new family from the present that they may never know they had.”
