Yahoo has announced plans to let computer users to make and receive phone calls at rates that undercut eBay-owned rival Skype.

Yahoo said its new version of Yahoo Messenger will allow people to dial regular phone lines and also receive calls.

Details are still to be confirmed, but Yahoo says it will initially offer the service in 180 countries.

While the calls will not be free, they will be very cheap – estimated at around 1p for many international calls.
