TalkTalk is offering free broadband for life to customers who sign up to its telephone service.
By switching to its £9.99 a month telephone service, paying a set-up fee of £29.99 and paying line rental of £11 a month to TalkTalk rather than BT, customers are promised up to 8Gbps downloads and a 40GB monthly usage cap.
The offer is only available to customers of unbundled phone exchanges, where TalkTalk has installed its own equipment. It plans to enable 1000 such exchanges by May, making the service available to 70% of the UK.
Customers must take the £9.99 a month Talk3 International phone package to benefit from free broadband. It offers free calls to UK landlines and cheap calls abroad, including 2p per minute to the US and Spain.
Charles Dunstone, chief executive of TalkTalk owner Carphone Warehouse, said: "Today we are cutting more than 60 per cent off the cost of the average UK residential telephony and broadband bill, and additionally providing unlimited calls to 28 international destinations. The residential telecoms market in the UK will never be the same again. From today, broadband is a right, not a privilege.”
There are approximately 10 million UK broadband users according to communications watchdog Ofcom.
