BT is opening a new mega-fast internet cafe in one of England’s most remote areas that will be able to download data at speeds up to 100Mbps.
The cafe's machines, 25 to 50 times faster than those available to most residential customers, will be available for use free of charge to visitors at Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station, on the Lizard peninsula in Cornwall.
The station is the largest of its type in the world. It handles a range of BT data transfer, including international phone calls, TV broadcasts and electronic data, and attracts as many as 80,000 visitors a year.
BT spokesman Adrian Hosford said the speeds are so fast that it would be possible to download the equivalent of the full Encyclopaedia Britannica in less than 15 minutes.
“Such technology will also mean that people can choose to travel less, helping the planet to deal with climate change and creating a more sustainable future,” he said.
However, speeds up to 100Mbps are already available to some home users in other parts of the world, such as Korea and Japan.
