A new email phishing campaign is promising a cash prize from Google’s Gmail system to entice people.

The email purports to be from the popular free email service and encourages people to click though to another website and provide their details in order to obtain the prize.

It claims that the recipient has been randomly selected for a US$500 (£272) cash prize, that can be claimed by entering credit card details to pay for a membership fee.

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at security firm Sophos, warned users to ignore all unsolicited emails, regardless of what they may seem to offer.

“Anyone tempted to try and collect the prize is in danger of walking straight into a trap set by these fraudsters. People need to learn that there is no such thing as a free lunch, and be much more wary of unsolicited email communications whoever they may appear to come from,” he said.
