Windows Vista stands a 20 per cent chance of missing its January release date, according to Microsoft chairman Bill Gates.

Gates released the figure when talking to software partners in South Africa about the firm’s much anticipated new operating system.

The company had hoped to launch Vista in November this year, but abandoned this plan and pencilled in January 2007 as the new release date.

However, it seems this new date may not be met and Gates indicated he was happy to delay the product further, if it was not in perfect condition.

The Office 2007 package that will run with Vista has also been delayed until December, three months after the original plans for an October release.

In May, Microsoft released a website telling people what hardware they will need to run Vista.
