MySpace crashes after power failure

Social networking site MySpace has been shut down due to a power failure at its data centre.

Instead of members’ profiles, the site is currently displaying a game of Pacman for visitors to play, and a message saying MySpace hopes to have the site back up by midday today UK time.

The message reads: "hey everyone! there's been a power outage in our data center. we're in the process of fixing it right now, so sit tight. hopefully we'll be back online within the hour. its 6:40pm PST now. wanna place a bet? -Tom"

MySpace is one of the most popular destinations on the web, with more than two million visitors each month.

UPDATE: MySpace is now back online.

Guy Bunker, chief scientist from Symantec, said the reports of the power outage
shows not only "the interest, influence and popularity of the site", but also
the knock-one effects of not being prepared for things to go wrong.

"This is another example of a company that has been a great success in terms of extreme growth, but needs to review what happens when an online business
suddenly stops running," he said.

"Ultimately, for organisations whose business model is 100 percent online, 24/7 availability of service is essential in order to maintain its reputation and continue."
