UK video phone users can now publish movies directly onto the web via text message.

Fully launched today after beta testing, SelfcastTV.com lets people upload video from mobiles and PCs. Clips will then feature on the website, in a similar way to YouTube.

Suranga Chandratillake, founder of SelfcastTV.com, said “Just as podcasting was the craze of 2005, video blogging and sharing is what is taking the world by storm in 2006. Whether it’s making videos or just watching them and sending them on to friends, everyone’s got the bug.

“What makes SelfcastTV stand out from the crowd is that our users can upload footage straight to the site with a simple text message. Unlike other popular video sharing sites, SelfcastTV is a UK site, built specifically for the UK market and we’ve made sure we have tailored services and features that fit with what the UK audience wants.”

Chandratillake told Web User he hopes that people will use SelfcastTV to share videos they take with their mobile phones with a wider audience, instead of just showing them to a few people as they do now. Ultimately, he said, he would like the site to become the “Flikr of video”.

The site also lets people add their favourites to a ‘channel’ and then watch the videos one after another, full-screen in a thing called ‘movie mode’.

People can also comment and rate the clips, as well as add them to blogs and other sites.
