An online travel scam has left almost 3,000 people out of pocket after they were conned into paying for non-existent holidays.

The scammers used fake holiday websites, took the money and didn’t deliver, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA).

ABTA's Dee Byrne said that at least six or seven sites were set up, thought to be by the same people, and then quickly closed.

She said people will have lost their money unless they paid by credit card.

The Metropolitan Police, the Fraud Squad and the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) are investigating the matter.

Byrne said people booking holidays online should always check that a site is an ABTA member or affiliated to other organisations like Air Travel Organisers' Licensing.

She also warned that if an offer looks too good to be true, it probably is.
