Three-quarters of UK web users now connect to the internet via broadband, new figures reveal.

According to the Office for National Statistics, broadband connections accounted for 72.6 per cent of all internet connections in June compared to 54.4 per cent in the same period last year.

The total number of UK households with internet access reached 14.3 million, representing an increase of 57 per cent between 2005 and 2006.

According to the figures, 49 per cent of London homes have broadband connections compared to only 28 per cent of homes in Northern Ireland.

The findings also show that 45 per cent of women in the UK have never used the internet compared with 30 per cent of men.
