Visitors to the Lycos site can now search for and watch more than five million hours of video clips, including TV content, news clips, short documentaries, and music videos.

Lycos has teamed up with video search engine blinkx to offer the service, which can be accessed through the search bar on the homepage.

Blinkx technology looks at the words spoken in clips and at speech patterns when searching, and blinkx founder Suranga Chandratillake claims this give more accurate results than other video search engines which look at tags.

The announcement is part of Lycos’ strategy to expand its products and services for broadband users and try and create a more ‘TV’ like experience on the web.

Alfred Tolle, chief executive officer at Lycos, said: “As [we continue to] push into building community around high-quality video content, giving users access to a best in class video search experience is critical.”
