Debenhams has invested millions of pounds into making its website more robust after admitting it was unable to meet demand from shoppers.

The department store chain said the £7m to £8m investment was necessary to ensure the website has "a lot more capacity" and more interactive features.

At the moment during busy periods, Debenhams.com shoppers are occasionally greeted with the following message:

"We are very sorry you are unable to shop at Debenhams.com. The recent problems you may have experienced on www.debenhams.com have been due to unprecedented levels of demand. We are committed to providing all our customers with an excellent online shopping experience and are working hard to bring you a bigger and better website in the autumn."

A spokesman for the website told Web User: "There is a huge amount of demand for the site and on occasion we can't meet all of that demand. It's something we're aware of and are addressing the problem."

"This investment will build a completely new website that can cope with demand and will also offer some interesting new interactive features."

Debenhams, which has commissioned IBM to help relaunch the website, hopes the new-look site will launch in time for the Christmas trading period.
