Popular file-sharing site eDonkey has closed, and its owners MetaMachine have promised to pay $30m (£16m) to the Recording Industry Association of America.
Also closed are MetaMachine sites eDonkey 2000, and the Overnet network.
The closures come after a New York court ruled that the peer-to-peer sites let people swap copyright material illegally.
Visitors to the eDonkey site are now greeted with a message that says:
“The eDonkey2000 Network is no longer available. If you steal music or movies, you are breaking the law.
“Courts around the world - including the United States Supreme Court -
have ruled that businesses and individuals can be prosecuted for illegal
downloading.
“You are not anonymous when you illegally download copyrighted material.
“Your IP address is xx.xxx.xxx.x and has been logged.
“Respect the music, download legally.”
Mitch Bainwol, chairman and chief executive of the Recording Industry Association of America, said: "With this new settlement, another domino falls, and we have further strengthened the footing of the legal marketplace.”
In July file-sharing site Kazaa also agreed to stop people illegally downloading copyrighted material and promise to become a legal download site.
