Record industry threatens YouTube

Universal Music may sue YouTube and MySpace for copyright infringement, it is claimed.

Universal Music may sue YouTube and MySpace for copyright infringement, it is claimed.

Both websites carry music videos from Universal, the world’s largest record company, and Universal head Doug Morris is reportedly unhappy with the company’s property being shown for free.

He told US investors last week: “We believe these new businesses are copyright infringers and owe us tens of millions of dollars. How we deal with these companies will be revealed shortly.”

Universal, and other record companies, are in talks with both YouTube and MySpace to try and come to an agreement about how the content will be shown and possible ways to charge for it.

However, insiders say the meeting with YouTube aren’t progressing well and a law suit maybe in the pipeline.

YouTube removes copyright-infringing material uploaded by users as soon as it is notified, but there is still a large amount of copyrighted material on the site.

In a separate move, YouTube and Warner Music have signed a deal to upload Warner music videos to the site.

It is rumoured that YouTube will track how many times the clips are watched and share advertising revenue with Warners in return.
