More than 100 years of phone book records are heading online thanks to a partnership between BT and Ancestry.co.uk.

The total collection of the British Phone Books, 1880-1984 contains more than 250 million names, has been digitised, and is now searchable by name, year and county.

Josh Hanna, managing director at Ancestry.co.uk, said the records will help family history enthusiasts fill in gaps in their family trees.

He said the collection features a raft of famous people, such as Sir Winston Churchill, Lawrence Olivier and Bram Stoker.

David Hay, of BT archives, said that the phonebooks provide a unique snapshot of communities, making them an ideal source for social and family historians.

The books date to 1984, the year of BT’s privatisation. The first to go online are those from Greater London.
