Apple is clamping down on companies using the word ‘pod’, claiming that the word ‘pod’ falls under Apple's trademark protection.
A US company Podcast Ready, who makes an application called myPodder that lets people download podcasts onto MP3 players, said it was sent a cease-and-desist letter from Apple last week claiming legal rights to the word pod.
The letter is the latest in a series sent by Apple to people with ‘Pod’ in their names, including Tightpod, a laptop protector, and Profit Pod, a device for games arcade owners to use to count tokens.
Podcast Ready posted the letter on its website. The letter read: "Podcast Ready and myPodder consist in substantial part of Apple's iPod mark and contain Apple's 'pod' mark in its entirety."
While iPod is a trademark, podcast and podcasting have been embraced as generic terms, with the New Oxford American Dictionary naming it ‘word of the year’ in 2005.
Just this month, BT launched a new website called BT PodShow.
