The number of homes in the UK with a broadband line is set to shoot up to 18.5 million at the end of 2008, according to research. This compares to 9.8 million at the end of last year.
A study carried out by analysts at Point Topic forecasts that 64 per cent of British homes will have a broadband connection by the end of 2008. This is nearly double the figure - 34 per cent - for the end of 2005.
The area with the highest takeup, rather unsurprisingly, is the south east of England. Waverley in Surrey is forecast to have 91 per cent of homes connected to broadband services by the end of 2008, with Wycombe and Aylesbury Vale just behind on 89 and 88 per cent respectively.
However, there's positive news for the rest of the country too. Remote rural areas will see the fastest rates of growth and catch up with urban areas, according to Point Topic.
