A staggering 85 per cent of UK homes receive unsolicited emails every day, a new survey has revealed.

The survey commissioned by uSwitch.com, found that even though 14.4 million home users were now exposed to unsolicited and potentially harmful spam, only four per cent have a ‘junk email’ filter.

According to the survey, an astonishing 74 million unwanted emails inundate UK inboxes every day.

Figures from Spamhaus cited in the report show that the UK is seventh in the league table for the circulation of junk email. The US and China top the list.

Chris Williams, broadband expert at uSwitch.com, said: “This criminal activity is a huge concern as it’s growing at such a staggering rate. In August 2005 there were 160 phishing incidents reported; in August 2006 these figures leapt 800 percent to 1,484. And with phishing losses reaching £23.2 million in 2005 it’s costing us over £63,000 a day.”
