The entire works of Charles Darwin have been made available on the internet by Cambridge University. More than 50,000 pages of searchable text and 40,000 images were put online yesterday.

Cambridge University says the site is aimed at serious scholars but there is something there for anyone who has even a passing interest in Darwin. Some of Darwin's work is available in mp3 format - an audio version of the Origin of Species is available, for example.

"The idea is to make these important works as accessible as possible; some people can only get at Darwin that way," said Dr John van Wyhe, the director of the project.
